HE LOVED WORKING but absolutely hated it all the same. the work itself wasn't bad, nor was the people he worked with for the most part, but it was the sometimes stressful customers he had to deal with that made him want to reconsider his occupational choice. of course, with his age and jobs being hard enough to find already, he didn't even have the choice to think about going anywhere else even if he wanted to. unfortunately, that also meant he had to resign to dealing with those less than friendly customers which was hardly good when the boy had such a nasty temper anyway. he'd been scolded plenty of times by the manager who thankfully had yet to fire him for it, most of the time intervening before he had the chance to go off. as much as he could be a ticking time-bomb, it seemed like his hardworking attitude was enough to keep his job so he couldn't complain too much. try not to, anyway. fortunately, today's shift was going pretty well. he'd yet to deal with anyone with a bad mood. unfortunately, there was still a chance since he had a couple more hours before his shift ended. at this hour though, the diner was relatively slow, meaning that the last stretch was taking painfully long as the young waiter was forced to try and find something to occupy himself (which was currently some crude doodles on an old order ticket) until someone either showed up or it was time to clock out. it would be the former, however, as the hostess would give him a simple tap on the shoulder, telling him he had table number three. showed how much he was paying attention to the door, he hadn't even heard anyone come in. no matter, he had something to do finally so he readied himself before heading to the table, pulling out his notepad and pen as he stood at the destination. "hey!" he began, putting on his friendly waiter face. "i'm tobias and i'll be serving you this evening." he went on, reciting the usual and being sure to use his name as it apparently sounded more professional than toby. "what can i start you off with?" | Straight from your mouth and right through my backbone |

CAUTERIZE THESE WOUNDS Reuben didn't usually eat out. Most days, he just didn't have the time or energy to do so, what with two jobs and thoughts of a student loan always on his mind. It was simpler to just throw whatever he had in his fridge together, even if it meant he'd have to drag himself out grocery shopping every Sunday. But for whatever reason, the brunet had thought that maybe it'd be alright to indulge himself and eat out for once. The Vineyard had been out of the question. He had neither the money nor the desire to visit somewhere so frivolous, not when he was going to be dining alone. Mugshot only sold drinks and pastries, and he wasn't cheap enough (at least not today) to have nothing but bread and coffee for a meal. Besides, he saw more than enough of his workplace, so that was out too. That left Fish Eye and maybe Centrifuge, but there was no way Reuben was going anywhere near the latter, so Fish Eye it was. Which was why he was currently seated at a booth by the window, preparing to muster up a sunny smile for whoever was coming to take his order. Said person turned out to be a teen about as tall as the Lazarus was, and spotted ears twitched in pleasant surprise as the Blank caught sight of the raven who'd introduced himself as Tobias. ...Wasn't that the boy who he'd spied hanging with his brother the other day? Fancy meeting him here of all places. Still, Reuben smiled warmly at the waiter. "Hi Toby," he greeted in return with a small wave, nickname already on his lips. Oh wait, the other was here to take his order, right. Still, ordering was the worst part of dining out; Reuben always wanted to try everything. "Surprise me?" he asked instead, tilting his head to the side. It was a bit of an odd request, but perhaps the teen would indulge him. WELL THIS ONE SEEMED FRIENDLY. toby could almost rejoice in relief, but he wasn't about to make a fool out of himself, or potentially weird out the one guy who wasn't going to be a dick to him today. speaking of which, this guy looked awfully familiar. where had he seen him before? when the nickname fell off the older man's lips, it seemed to click, toby smiling a bit brighter as he recognized ezra's older brother and (not as pleasantly received) the school nurse. "oh! hey there mr. lazarus!" he greeted properly, almost forgetting he was supposed to be taking the man's order, not sitting down and having a chat. "almost didn't recognize you without the infirmary behind you." he joked. he wasn't a bad guy from what he could tell, but he certainly didn't enjoy the visits whenever he had to go. it wasn't because reuben was mean by any means, but he disliked the whole being taken care of thing far too much to make the visit easy. getting back to work however, toby had the pen on the pad, ready to write down the order only to be given a rather odd request. he didn't remember 'surprise' being on the menu.. of course he knew very well what he was asking, but it wasn't everyday someone requested the waiter to make the decision. "hmmm..." he thought to himself before writing something down. "don't hate me if it's something you don't like." he smirked, not at all going to take blame if the surprise order wasn't to his taste. but toby wasn't that bad. he'd make sure to get something good and if not to his tastes, he'd likely get him something else to make up for it. "i'll be right back with your drink." he finished, not giving the blonde a chance to have second thoughts before he left the table and headed to the back to have his food prepared. sure enough, minutes later he returned. "i don't know why but you seem like the kind of guy who'd like tea." he explained as he set the glass down on the table, not at all going on to explain how it was because he'd thought the same thing about ezra when he'd first saw the perfectionist. of course, the beverage was hardly fancy, being a simple sweet tea with a lemon slice, but it was fancy as far as his standards. ".. that okay?" he questioned despite his earlier behavior making him seem like he could care less. well he kind of wanted to keep his job. despite that, he also wanted to make sure reuben actually wanted it before running off again. he knew if he were in his position he'd certainly not want to spend money on something he didn't even like. then again, he wouldn't be in that predicament anyway because he didn't tell the waiter to 'surprise' him. | Straight from your mouth and right through my backbone |

CAUTERIZE THESE WOUNDS It seemed like the teen recognized him after all, and Reuben smiled when the student brightened. It was tough seeing the sophomore whenever he had to swing by the infirmary, especially since he didn't like being fussed over, but that was something the blond couldn't help. It was in his nature to care, after all, and sometimes, he wished the raven would just let him do his job, but it was a half-hearted complaint and was never spoken aloud. "Maa, just call me Rue. Being called 'Mr. Lazarus' all the time makes me feel old," he returned light-heartedly. Grin widening, he added, "And look at you, all neat and professional in uniform. If only you'd be as careful with your school uniform too..." the last bit was sighed mock-pityingly, though the way the blond's eyes shone with good-natured laughter said he wasn't being serious. "But of course~" Reuben knew exactly what it was he was asking for, turning over his order to his (well, not really his, but...) student's capable hands. Asking to be surprised meant that he'd be risking the chance of landing something he didn't quite like or something overly expensive. But well, it was kind of fun, not knowing what to expect, so he didn't really mind. Waving cheerfully at Toby's retreating back, he called, "Then for today, I'll be under your care!"Not long after, the elder Lazarus was once again startled out of his silent musing when his waiter returned with a glass of something amber colored. Juice...? No, it seemed to be tea. For a second, the twenty-year old just sort of blinked at his drink before an appreciative smile lit his face. Tea, even the cold, sweetened type, was near the top of his list of favorites. "My, it's like you can see right through me. How did you know, I wonder..." Grinning reassuringly, the blond gave Toby a double thumbs up. "It's great, I like it! Thanks Toby~" It hadn't taken long for Reuben to realize that the raven-haired Sacrifice was really more thoughtful than his temper and nonchalance would suggest, and for that, the blond was truly grateful. Toby was definitely a good kid. OOC TAGGED Tobias BriggsWORD COUNT 363 NOTES Uwaaahhh, sorry this is so late. D: MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS

CORRECTED, toby simply nodded, smirking at the 'old' comment but saying nothing about it. "rue." he replied instead, assuring him he'd call him such from now on. he personally liked it better anyway. less formal. speaking of formal, the older man had pointed out his attire and while not exactly formal, it was uniform, something he absolutely despised following at the academy. "the school should start paying me to wear it and then we'll talk." he chuckled. even if the comment on his attire had been serious, he seemed to take it lightly, certainly not going to mend his ways after this conversation. back to work though, toby had sent the order back to the cook and had been waiting for the nurse's judgement on the drink choice, pleased to find he'd thought right. "a magician never tells their secrets." he offered jokingly, still not caring to explain how he could picture the lazarus brothers in top hats and monocles talking about fancy things over some tea. it was a funny image, but probably not something that would be very well received. he didn't think them as pompous (well, maybe ezra just a little bit) but it could easily be taken that way or at the very least he'd be laughed at for being weird (he kind of was, but he didn't need to be reminded). but onto more important matters. "the food will be out in a little bit." he explained, though this time was in no rush to leave. there was no one else in the diner to attend to currently, this part of the day tending to be pretty quiet (especially since winter wasn't exactly the popular season for seafood anyway). instead, he leaned against the back of the booth across from reuben to take it easy. had the diner been more busy, he might have gotten scolded for doing so, but none of the other staff seemed to notice or care. "i don't think i've ever caught you here before." he thought to himself out loud, resting his chin on his forearms as they rested on top of the seat, thinking back as far as he could for any time he might have at least saw his face but the only things that came to mind were of course his visits to the nurse's office. "what are you doing in town?" he questioned out of curiosity, taking the time to chat while the order was being prepared. he knew exactly when it would finish, usually ordering the meal himself (when he had enough money) and trusting his own taste to make the decision for the adult. of course, when he'd went out to place it, the cook did seem rather suspicious, assuming the teen was ordering himself something on the job (he only tried that once). | Straight from your mouth and right through my backbone |

CAUTERIZE THESE WOUNDS "Maybe I will," the blond mused quietly to himself, and for a second, he actually entertained the thought. It seemed many of the delinquents at school disliked the school uniform, which was understandable. Not wearing it properly was almost like making a statement. Then again, if Toby wore the school uniform properly more, he'd be less likely to get into fights... Or not. He would however, probably get less grief from Ezra about dressing right. (He chuckled a little at that image.) Lord knew how high those standards he imposed on others were... "Fair enough, Mr. Magic," Reuben agreed, the easy smile never leaving his face as he propped his head up with his elbow. Nodding to show that he'd heard about the food, the nurse cast his eyes through the diner. Perhaps it was just the time, or maybe the season, but the building seemed to be pretty empty. Well, that was fine with him, he liked the quiet. Surprised that Toby cared enough to ask about his whereabouts, the Blank reached his free hand, which had been curled loosely around his drink, up to rub at the back of his neck. "Are you saying I shouldn't be?" he teased, tail flicking in amusement. Of course, that was obviously not the case, but still, he wondered about those words. From the sound of it, Toby worked here a lot if he was confident that any other time Reuben walked in would be during his shift... A spark of worry flared to life in his chest, but what Toby did outside of school wasn't really his business (not to mention he honestly didn't know enough) so he simply chuckled a little sheepishly. "Heheh, you're right though, I've never been here before," he admitted. "Usually, I'm too tired after work to do more than drag myself home and scrounge up something there, so..." Trailing off, the blond frowned at the slightly depressed tone he'd taken on. "But of course, today's my day off, so I thought I'd venture out and see what the town had to offer." There, now he sounded a little more upbeat. Well, time to return fire. "What about you?" he asked curiously, "Do you work here often?" Who knows, maybe he'd swing by more often if the raven did just to make sure he was doing well. ...And to maybe bug him about telling him more about Ezra.OOC TAGGED Tobias BriggsWORD COUNT 401 NOTES \o/ MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS

A SMIRK TUGGED AT THE CORNER OF HIS MOUTH, unable to tell just how he felt learning that teasing seemed to be a family trait. "yeah, we're obviously very exclusive here." he shot back. only the best of the best could show up at this top notch diner. not even the regulars at the vineyard were allowed here! of course he dropped that thought as the teacher had went on to explain. perhaps he shouldn't have asked the teen thought with a faint frown. then again, it wasn't much different from his situation he supposed. having to care for himself and his mother, it was a necessity for him to work and dropping out of school simply wasn't an option, so he had to juggle the both of them. he was just fortunate his manager understood his situation, making sure the dark-haired boy had time to grow outside of his job. fortunately, before the two of them could get too consumed by such thoughts, reuben went on, sounding a bit more cheerful now which caused the empathetic teen to smile back. "best way to spend it, i guess." probably more so for the older male than himself though, as he seemed to only get into trouble anytime he simply ventured out into the town and that was something he knew better than to share, having a pretty good feeling he'd end up worrying the nurse. not that he'd had the chance the change the subject anyway as rue of course decided to return the question. "work here any chance i get." he offered with a shrug. it was nice to have extra cash in his pockets when he was able, though at the same time, the boy did take advantage of his days off as well and often found it difficult to muster the willpower to go back into work the next day. the pay made it worth it though. "don't tell anyone though." he began, brows furrowed. "i've got a reputation to keep up and i don't need jerks coming in and taking advantage of my hospitality." he chuckled. it'd happened before, though not with his peers. just some guy he happened to get into an argument with who ate it up when the boy couldn't really act up while he was serving him. fortunately that didn't seem to be the case with the older lazarus at least. pulling up his sleeve though, he caught a glimpse of the time and straightened himself up. on cue, a ding of a bell could be heard from the back, alerting him that the food was ready to be served. "aaannd i'll be right back." he announced, sticking out his tongue before fleeing the scene momentarily and heading back to fetch the shrimp dish, unfazed by the 'watching you' gesture the cook had given him as he'd grabbed the plate and scurried off. ah, it was fresh and he was half tempted to order his own later once he'd gotten off work, his stomach already rumbling thanks to the smell. "and here's your food." he offered as he sat the plate in front of him. the dish was a shrimp pasta, probably one of the fancier looking foods available on the menu (aside from the popular things such as lobster). it wasn't exactly what you'd expect from a small diner, but it was pretty tasty in his opinion and he found himself envious of the nurse at that moment. maybe he could convince his favorite cook to give him some leftovers free of charge. unlikely, but he'd figure that out later. "anything else you need?" he questioned, obligated to ask before he'd leave. not that he had the intention of leaving though, having nothing else to do and would prefer chatting with the older male for the last of his shift rather than twiddle his thumbs. "otherwise i'm gonna stare at you like a creep till you tell me if it's good or not." he admitted with a grin. ©
