Terminology
Mundane
A normal human; someone incapable of participating in spell battles. They have no "true name" and no team.
True Name
The name that appears on each member of a team, dictating their partner and a quality about them. While most of these names end with "less", this is not always true. Some true names allow for particular quirks, like "moonless" being most powerful on the new moon, and both members of "sleepless" having insomnia.
Team / Pair
A sacrifice and fighter bonded by their true name. Though not all teams get along, they are bound by fate and connected by a mental "wire" that can be visualized if either party focuses, allowing them to locate each other whenever they so choose. On top of that, either member is capable of calling to the other, encouraging them to find their partner. A stable, well-bonded pair tends to be significantly stronger.
Sacrifice
Within a spell battle, the sacrifice is the one to take the damage. Within most teams, they are also the one in control, telling the fighter what to do, however, this varies from team to team.
Fighter
The spell caster of the group. Fighters are capable of changing their words to actions to attack in order to harm or restrain opposing sacrifices. Only a fighter can start a spell battle, and while it is frowned upon to start one without one's sacrifice, and while it will lower the fighter's defenses significantly, it is possible. On top of that, fighters always know when they pass other fighters, having something of a sixth sense.
Blank
A fighter or sacrifice without a "true Name". Often times blanks are seen as replacement parts. While capable of pairing up with any fighter or sacrifice, using a blank is looked down upon as it means that one wasn't capable of keeping their true teammate alive. Any team with a blank on it is handicapped, as the connection between someone with a blank will never be as strong as that of what two people meant for each other could be.
In order to foster some sort of artificial bond and create a connection of some sort with one's blank, it isn't uncommon for the member with a true name to carve that name onto their blank. While considered barbaric in some groups, it's rather common place in others. Other ways to foster this artificial bond include but are not limited to tattooing one's true name onto their blank or giving their blank a piercing.
While a pair with a blank can be stronger than that of a true pair when practiced and bonded, it shows a good deal of wasted potential, as if the two shared a true name, then the team could have been significantly more powerful.
The researchers at Blackwood Academy have been looking into creating blank-only teams and have been trying to manufacture true names for these blanks. Though this has been somewhat successful, these teams created from blanks occasionally fall apart, resulting in the two becoming blanks once more, and they tend to be a bit weaker than true teams.
Zeroes
Zeroes are the first kind of manufactured team. Designed by Nagisa Sagan, they were created to feel no pain. While this could be considered a blessing, it is also their greatest downfall. Having no concept of temperature or pain, it's very common for them to destroy themselves entirely on accident.
Recent zeroes have been upgraded in order to allow them to feel pressure. While still having no concept of pain, they can feel how tightly they hold something and how deeply they've been cut. This allows for better interaction with the world without entirely destroying the concept of them feeling nothing.
Due to all zeroes having the name "zero", any zero can be paired with any other zero of opposite position. However, most zeroes find this to be a TRAUMATIC experience mentally and prefer not to.
Spell Battle
Spell battles are a manipulation of words in order to create physical consequences. These spells can vary from shifts in the weather, to the creation of illusions, to physical attacks, to restraining the opposing sacrifice. Spell battles continue until either one of the sacrifices is unable to stand- either due to restraints placed on them or the amount of damage taken- or until a sacrifice admits defeat.
